__________________________________any color bottle/ For years, the same horse entered my dreams, Waiting where a trail dissolved in rain. Each time I reached to touch its shoulder, I woke with the sound of water in my ears. My father knew the place before I named it. He took an old photograph from a drawer: His mother standing there beside her father, The mountain rising through the faded light. We walked that trail together in the autumn. Near the falls, he stopped to catch his breath. I heard a horse approaching through the timber; He turned before I spoke and whispered, “Listen.” The hoofbeats ceased, but something warm stood near. His hand reached out and rested on the air. For once, he told the stories without hurry; I stayed until the dark had gathered us. On our way home, he leaned against my shoulder, Still naming those the photograph had lost. That night, the horse came closer in my dreaming— And lowered its head into my open hands.
